1. What is the purpose of this grinder?
This machine is specifically designed to surface grind and sharpen the faces of punches and dies used in punch presses. It restores tooling to its original geometry, ensuring clean cuts and extending the life of your tooling.
2. Can it grind both the punch and the die button?
Yes. The grinder is equipped with dual stations or adaptable fixtures that allow for the precise sharpening of both the male punch (to restore its cutting edge) and the female die button (to clean up the slug ejection area).
3. How does it ensure correct angles and clearance?
The machine features precision-ground locking pins and adjustable guides. When the punch is placed against the guide pin (or located in the V-pin), it automatically presents the cutting angle (usually a slight concavity or flat) to the wheel, maintaining the factory-specified geometry and radial clearance.
4. How much material should be removed during each sharpening?
We recommend removing only the minimum amount necessary to achieve a clean, sharp edge-typically between 0.1mm and 0.3mm (0.004"-0.012"). Aggressive cutting can generate heat and soften the tool steel (annealing), which drastically reduces tool life.
5. Does this grinder require coolant?
It is highly recommended. While small, intermittent cuts can be done dry with a proper vitrified wheel, using the built-in coolant system (or mist coolant) prevents heat buildup. This maintains the hardness of the high-speed steel or carbide tooling and provides a superior surface finish.
6. What type of grinding wheel should I use?
· For High-Speed Steel (HSS) punches: Use a white or pink aluminum oxide wheel.
· For Carbide tooling: Use a diamond or CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) wheel.
Always consult the machine manual for the specific spindle speed and wheel dimensions.
7. How long does it take to set up and sharpen a tool?
Setup is very quick. Locating the punch against the guide pin and clamping it usually takes less than 30 seconds per tool. The grinding process itself takes about 1-2 minutes per tool, depending on how much material needs to be removed.
8. Will this work on shaped punches (oblong, rectangular, etc.)?
Yes. The grinder can accommodate various shapes. Round punches use a V-pin locating system, while shaped punches often use a back-stop or custom fixtures to ensure the cutting edge is ground square to the punch body.
9. Is it necessary to remove the ball bearings or retainers from the punch?
It is best practice to remove the urethane strippers or ball bearing guides before sharpening. While you do not need to disassemble the punch tip from the head, you must ensure the pilot area (the part that enters the die) is clear of debris and the shank is clean for accurate location.
10. What are the signs that the grinding wheel needs dressing?
You should dress (true) the wheel if you see burn marks (blue discoloration) on the punch, if the surface finish appears rough or chattered, or if the machine requires excessive pressure to cut.
